Electrician in East Kildonan

East Kildonan built out after the Second World War, so Sparxx starts with panel size and older circuits, using the housing age of each neighbourhood.

East Kildonan was built out in a hurry. It was incorporated as the City of East Kildonan on 1 July 1957, when it had about 20,000 people, and the area “developed rapidly after World War II” with “a housing boom in the mid 1950s.” If you need an electrician in East Kildonan, that tells you what to expect: post-war houses with panels and circuits sized for a different way of living.

Munroe and Rossmere do not share one housing age

East Kildonan is made up of neighbourhoods such as Munroe, Morse Place, Rossmere and Fraser’s Grove. The City publishes census figures for Munroe and Rossmere in parts, and the ages differ a lot. Share of homes built in 1960 or earlier (2021 census):

  • Munroe West: 76.9%
  • Rossmere-B: 70.3%
  • Munroe East: 40.7%, with 41.3% built from 1961 to 1980

For comparison, 31.3% of Winnipeg’s homes were built in 1960 or earlier. Munroe West and Rossmere-B are mostly older houses, where we start with the panel and the wiring. Munroe East is mixed, so the questions there depend on the street.

What post-war housing usually needs

Homes from the 1950s may have a small original service or an older panel. Where the panel is small for what the house runs now, the work is an electrical panel upgrade. Our panel upgrade cost guide covers the budget side.

For houses from 1961 to 1980, panel capacity is the question when you add central air or an EV charger. Homes from the mid-1960s to the late 1970s may also have aluminum wiring. Where wiring is old enough to need replacing, home rewiring is the job, and for a buyer an electrical inspection shows what shape the house is in. We also install lighting and EV chargers, and before we add a big load we check whether the existing panel and service can carry it.

Joined Winnipeg in 1972

East Kildonan amalgamated into the City of Winnipeg in 1972, so the City of Winnipeg issues electrical permits here, and we take care of the permit and the inspection when a job needs one. For buildings that are not homes, see our commercial electrician page.

East Kildonan Electrician Questions

My East Kildonan house is from the 1950s. What should I check first?

The panel and the service size. Homes from the post-war boom may have a small service for what a house runs today. We look at the panel, the circuits and the wiring, then tell you what is there and what it needs before you decide anything.

I am buying in East Kildonan and my home inspector wants an electrician to look. Can you?

Call us and tell us what the inspector wrote down. Elton checks the panel and wiring, explains your options in plain words and tells you what, if anything, needs work.

Who issues the electrical permit in East Kildonan?

East Kildonan joined the City of Winnipeg in 1972, so the City issues the permit. When a job needs one, we take care of it and the inspection that follows. On panel upgrades we also arrange the Manitoba Hydro disconnect and reconnect.
