St. James is one of Winnipeg’s largest and most established residential areas, with a housing stock that spans several decades — but the core of the neighbourhood was built during the 1950s through 1970s. That puts a huge number of St. James homes squarely in the aluminum wiring era. Homes built during the mid-1960s to mid-1970s were commonly wired with aluminum branch circuits, and the connections at outlets, switches, and junction boxes have been loosening and corroding for 50 years.
The other common electrical issue in St. James is panel capacity. Homes from the 1950s and 1960s often still have 100-amp panels — or in some cases, original fuse boxes — that were never upgraded.
